SDG5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

March 22, 2023

‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’ is the theme of Sustainable Development Goal number 5 (SDG 5).

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Some progress has been made over the past decades: more girls go to school; fewer girls are forced into early marriage; there are more women in parliament and leadership posts; and laws are being changed to foster gender equality. It is a process that is underway and needs to continue.

Marta Postigo Asenjo, Doctor of Philosophy and senior lecturer in Moral Philosophy and Politics at the UMA, and Alicia Marchant Rivera, professor of Historiographic Sciences and Techniques, will discuss issues such as the urgent need to put an end to all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls all over the world, among other subjects. Of the many issues covered by SDG 5, women’s access to academia, scientific research and higher education are some of them. Marta Postigo and Alicia Marchant address these issues as members of the University Institute for Gender and Equality Research at the University of Malaga and are the invited speakers to debate SDG 5 at the MPM.

The aim is to ensure the full and effective participation of women through universal equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of political, economic and public life.
