THE MUSEO PICASSO MÁLAGA PRESENTS ‘FLAMENCO X JOEL MEYEROWITZ’

04/06/2024

Joel Meyerowitz. Europa 1966-1967 opens at the Museo Picasso Málaga on 15 June featuring early works by this prestigious photographer. The show brings together photos taken during his European trip, the highlight of which was his six-month stay in the city of Málaga.

Coming into contact with flamenco in this Andalusian city left a deep mark on him. The Museo Picasso Málaga has put together the Flamenco x Joel Meyerowitz programme, a series of activities scheduled for the third week of June and until the show ends in December. Carmen Linares, Ramón Soler, ‘La Lupi’, Paco Roji and Joel Meyerowitz are some of the people featured.

Málaga was a very important milestone in Joel Meyerowitz’s travels around Europe, not only in terms of photography – as he found a city of contrasts and immortalised street scenes with his camera – but also on a personal level. As his partner Vivian wished to learn to play flamenco guitar, they were put in touch with the Escalona family whose patriarch, Antonio Escalona, became her teacher. The American couple thus came into contact with the very particular world of deep, traditional flamenco, with an initiatory nature that fascinated them.

The vernacular flamenco in which Joel and Vivian actively participated, both at the Escalonas’ home and at the iconic Peña Juan Breva, can be clearly seen in the photographs on display at the Museo Picasso Málaga, and is intended to be recreated and analysed through the Flamenco x Joel Meyerowitz series… These talks and concerts will take place mainly from June 18 to 22 but will continue during the months that Joel Meyerowitz. Europa 1966-1967 is on display at the museum. This special programme, designed with the advice of the flamencologist Lourdes Gálvez del Postigo, will be held in three venues: the Museo Picasso Málaga itself and its auditorium, the Museo de la Aduana, and Calle Alcazabilla.

Important names in today’s flamenco scene, such as the singer Carmen Linares, the critic Ramón Soler, the dancer ‘La Lupi’ and the guitarist Juan Ramón Caro, among others, as well as Joel Meyerowitz himself and Miguel López-Remiro, curator of the exhibition and artistic director of the Museo Picasso Málaga, will take part in meetings and concerts. In addition, every Saturday in July, at 12 noon, the museum will offer its visitors guitar solos in the central courtyard of the Palacio de Buenavista.
