Music

New Forms

Oct 28, 2023

An evening of music that operates on the fringe and places the focus on creativity and experimentation.

The event consists of three audiovisual pieces ranging from the melancholic calm and unique approach of Ylia’s ambient music and Liquid Sky’s live analogue visuals to an industrial beat in which Cruhda and Balcanes merge into one, plus an amalgam of pop, urban rhythms and post-punk by Margarita Quebrada, who present their latest work in a show featuring visuals by Duelo.

Ylia + Liquid Sky (Live AV)

Ylia (Susana Hernández) is a Spanish producer and DJ as well as a classically trained pianist who studied at the Málaga conservatory before earning a degree in arrangements and modern composition at the Taller de Músics in Barcelona. She directs the Animah Records label and collaborates on projects, including People You May Know with Venezuelan artist Phran and Bola Del Desierto with Darío del Moral, a member of Pony Bravo y Fiera. She is also a keyboardist at Niño de Elche’s live performances. Her live presentations and sets skilfully and confidently switch from one genre to another, sometimes providing space for abstraction and calm, while at other times she focuses on live, dance-friendly sounds. Her unique approach to sound has made her a regular presence at clubs and festivals all over Spain such as Mutek, MIRA and Sónar, and she also performs at international festivals like Transmusicales (Rennes), Sónar Hong Kong and DGTL, among others. Liquid Sky Analogic’s analogue projections complete her show in New Forms.

Cruhda + Balcanes

Cruhda + Balcanes is a joint concert in which the two projects merge into one to create a totally new set in which, in addition to live collaborations, a conversation is constructed that travels through the catalogue of Cruhda and Balcanes both jointly and separately, flowing into a new context that gives the songs a new lease of life. Cruhda aka Paula Gómez de Caso, is an artist who grew up in the heart of the Iberian plain (Meco, Madrid) playing traditional Spanish music on her clarinet. After gaining her degree in philosophy in Madrid, she founded several post-punk bands and went on to join VACIADOR 34, a well-known avant-garde musical and political group based in Carabanchel (Madrid) that worked with key figures in the field of experimental electronic music from all around the world. She explores the combination of electronic music with Spanish folklore roots. Field recordings, the use of samples, synthesizers, vocal melodies and clarinets form the core of her compositions. In 2022 Cruhda moved to Berlin and finished work on her second album Lux Ahena in which she furthered her exploration of electronic and traditional Spanish music, incorporating dark ambient elements. Emancipation, land, sisterhood, death, truth and poetry are central to her musical imaginary. In their latest incarnation Balcanes shun the noise rock that has characterised them until now and morph into an electronic duet that is pure minimalism and brutality

Margarita Quebrada + Duelo (Live AV)

Margarita Quebrada is a leading name on Spain’s new post-punk scene. The Valencian trio made a statement with the premiere performance of their latest album Gas Lágrima. They have redefined themselves in this danceable pop album marked by urban music, experimenting with the genre and shunning nostalgia to incorporate new languages that show them to be a band that draws on the past to gaze at the future. This will be their first performance of the album in Málaga, in conjunction with Duelo’s live audiovisual show.
